What are the storage requirements for aerosols?

Aerosols fall under the category of Class 2 gases, which means that they fall within the broad requirements of AS 4332 - The storage and handling of gases in cylinders. Requirements include natural ventilation to prevent the build up of harmful or flammable gases, projectile protection if cans explode, suitable DG and hazard signage, plus security to deter unauthorised entry.

How should aerosols be used and stored?

You should only use and store aerosol products in well-ventilated areas, away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Read the label and safety data sheet (SDS) for your aerosol to ensure you’re following the correct safety guidelines.

What is an Aerosol Cage?

An Aerosol Cage is storage equipment specifically designed and constructed for the housing of aerosol cans. These are generally purpose-built cages that offer a specific range of controls to reduce the risks associated with aerosols including ignition and accidental releases.

Are aerosols Flammable?

In general, aerosols can be flammable, as many aerosol products contain flammable propellants or ingredients. The flammability of an aerosol depends on its specific formulation and ingredients. Common propellants like butane, propane, or isobutane are flammable, and they are used in many aerosol products like spray paints, deodorants, and hair sprays.
